Bengaluru citizen journalists meet for a quick session on data journalism
The citizen journalists met for the first time this new year on January 18 for a session on Data Journalism. This session was also conducted by Meera K, Co Media Lab’s resident expert and founder of Citizen matters, the hyperlocal news portal of Bengaluru.
The session focussed on showing the participants examples of data journalism done by popular news media organisations around the world. We looked at stories from websites including India Spend, The Hindu Data, Citizen Matters, Guardian Data Blog, Propublica, informationisbeautiful.net among others. The session also involved a quick demo of how to use Microsoft Excel, Google spreadsheets for simple data visualisation techniques. The participants also discussed some data related story ideas that they would be interested in pursuing.
This meeting was conducted as a part of Australia India Council Grants, where the participants receive constant mentoring by Co Media lab and have started contributing to a series of stories on issues that they are passionate about.
